- I'm the kind of person who doesn't know what to say when you ask him "where are you from?" I like to say I grew up in Michigan, discovered love in Florida and got laid off in Boston. I was laid off on September 10, 2001. That day I bought my first digital camera and this brought me back into the art world which I had neglected the minute I graduated from art school back in the '90s. I've been photographing constantly ever since.
What I like about photography really isn't that romantic probably. I can't really sum up my thoughts on photography and art in an "About Me" section, but I will say this: I get more joy and validation out of taking a picture in 3 minutes than designing websites in 3 months or 3 years (and I've done several like that...). I make no claims that my artwork is totally and only personal... when I photograph, I think about the audience and what they will get out of it. There are different levels of balance in the different photographs I take. I don't consider all them "art" in the purest sense. Some are "more art than others".
Errol Morris (a documentary filmmaker) recently said the great thing about photographs is that they only show what's in the frame. I don't know, maybe it's not profound to you as it is to me, but there's something poignant there. I'm not content in showing off skill or just taking a picture of what I see. I want the audience to get something more, and that is the drive that keeps me shooting.
