We had two wonderful fashion shows at Western Ave recently! I'm glad I was able to squeeze in a few shots from both! Press play to start the show!
Here are some of the beautiful pieces & lovely models from The Just Dreaming - Art to Wear Fashion Show:

Rebekah had visitors in her studio the other day who were trying to convince her to basically double the prices she has posted. "You have to get your head out of Lowell," they kept saying.
Hard to do if Lowell is where you are, and if you have a sense that your market is people like those who live in Lowell. I think we should charge an amount for the art we produce that allows both us (the creators) and our patrons to give the work the respect that it is due. But I have never been comfortable w… Continue
I have been on a little burst of playwrighting this fall, turning out half a dozen short plays after a longish spell of not completing anything at all. The spate is about to be interrupted as I concentrate for three months on a big project, but I have a backlog of story ideas to come back to at the end of the winter.
As an example, I have attached a little play about a corporate crisis. This probably needs another pass, as my primary reader says the consultant gets a little too flowery in her s… Continue

My Art is no art
Without my mind's simplicity.
My Art does not want
To subscribe to the view
That unhappiness
Commands the world.
When I paint or draw,
I keep my mind's thought-garden
Completely free of self-doubt-weeds.
My Art is the hide-and-seek
Between my soul's illumining smiles
And my heart's streaming tears.
The Artist in me has three
Faithful, sleepless
And self-giving friends:
A newness-eye, a oneness-heart
And a fulness-life.
The heart of my Art
And the heart of a child
Are extrem… Continue

Wow... Western Avenue is looking great! It's been amazing to see the transformation over the past five years, and with the annual Lowell Open Studios comes the annual sprucing up of the place. It's LOOKIN' GOOD!

Hi WASAA Friends!
I just recently moved into studio 302! I don't have anything outside my door yet, so I thought I'd share my favorite image from the weekend instead:
After reading my friend Tom's post (in another cyberspace) "Innovation in Ovation"... I thought it was time for my yearly celebration of one of my favorite quotes by Pearl Buck about the innovative mind and creative being. Many others, Victor Hugo, Margaret Mead, and more architects than I'd care to list, have said the same thing in different ways, but I really like this manner in which she expresses an inner experience of creative drive that most creatives I know recognize, celebrate and bemoan… Continue

Mary Poppins rocked, yes she did. After all, a gal that keeps a tall lamp and a wall mirror in a carpet bag, can’t be all bad, right? (Right.) Just a Spoon Full of Sugar la de da da dah da dah...you know how it goes. Intrinsically we know that when we quip, "Follow the Yellowbrick.." no, not that..."Stop and smell the flowers..." that something instinctual is at work. Yes, that. And we might even hoot out, "Eat dessert first!" We know that, but we live in a culture that says to work first and pl… Continue

An artist spends years trying to sell his paintings but no one buys them. Then one night thieves break in and steal all his paintings. They stash them in an old shed in the woods. The thieves have a hell of a time with the paintings. No fence will buy them, so finally they just give up and forget about them.
The years go by.
One day a hunter stumbles on the old shed and finds the paintings. He tells his friend who is an art critic and the art critic realizes they must have found the life w… Continue

Hard work lies ahead, but with unity, "yes, we can".

LOWELL -- A thunderous roar erupted from the balcony of the City Council Chamber Monday night as the Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously to approve developer Karl Frey's petition to bring 68 affordable artist live-work spaces to a vacant mill building on industrially zoned Western Avenue.
For the artists and their supporters, the primal scream released eight months of frustration and anger that had b… Continue

YOU NAME IT: Coming up with a title for a piece is one of the hardest jobs artists face. This Saturday through Aug. 28, Steve Syverson, Maxine Farkas and Gay Tracy let you in on the exercise at their exhibit In Pursuit of an Idea at Ayer Lofts Gallery. Entering the gallery, you'll encounter new work by the three, plus an assortment of 50 titles. The artists encourage you to title their works, and if a title's already been assigned, or you don't agree, change it. Titles remain fluid… Continue

'A Labor of Love'
Local artists struggling to make ends meet
By Nancye Tuttle
LOWELL -- Life's a juggling act for Ashlee Welz Smith. Between painting portraits, doing freelance work for a publishing company and running a summer art program for kids at Western Avenue Studios, she manages to make a living.
It isn't easy.
"I worry about paying the bills," said Smith, 31. "It's paycheck to paycheck, but it would be a waste if I wasn't doing my art. It was tedious sitting in front of… Continue
