The Artists of Western Avenue Studios

Featured Artists

Maxine Farkas
"To me Western Avenue is both sanctuary and community. Like many of the artists I talk to, I too, would not know what to do if I did not have this place. It is a place to work, to be messy, to be free to create. And if you allow it to, it can be more, so much more. It is a precious community of individuals who share a passion to create and who are more than willing to reach out to and support each other.

You could say that I have followed my bliss . . . and it is here."

Glenn Szegedy
"I have been at Western Ave Studios since the doors first opened. From the first metal studs on the fifth floor to the successful opening of the Loading Dock Gallery, the growth and development has been fast paced and successful. People today talk of “Community”, and how important it is, but true community, like a rare species, is very hard to locate. At Western Ave I have found a “true community”. It contains the good and the beautiful, the bad and the ugly, but it’s heart beats strong and true to the rhythm of the creative spirit."

Verde
"I used to paint in a 10x10 windowless room in my basement. Although a bit lonely, it was the only place in my house I could be creative, and messy! Mostly messy. Then I found out about Western Ave Studios! A place not only with big windows, but with people! Creative people; painters, photographers, jewelers, etc. Now I'm surrounded by creativity and new friends. A combination that guarantees success for me!"

Cindie Kazmer
"Western Avenue Studios is my sanctuary. It provides me with a refuge, a place to create, a place to get messy, a place to ponder, a place to make friends, a place to learn, a place to practice, a place to be inspired, a place to belong. I can't imagine my life without art and I can't imagine my art without Western Avenue Studios. Thanks Western Avenue!"

Learn More About Us...

Western Avenue Studios (WAS) opened its first studio doors to working artists on September 1, 2005. With additional conversions in the following years, we now host a total of 121 studios on four floors, which support a community of over 160 artists and artisans. With the high demand for affordable studio space, and work/live environments for artists, we are still planning to grow.

Since that opening day in 2005, the city of Lowell has welcomed the WAS community, as an integral and vital part of the historic city's cultural life. In addition to participating in the annual citywide Lowell Open Studios and holding monthly First Saturday Open Studios, WAS has provided venues for the 7th Annual International Edible Book Festival, the Lowell Quilt Festival, the Lowell Photography Weekend, and many others.

The Western Avenue Studios Artist Association (WASAA) represents many of the artists at WAS. The organization provides outreach and develops partnerships with other cultural institutions in the city and sponsors The Loading Dock Gallery, a cooperative venture of participating WASAA members.

If you are interested in learning more about Western Avenue Studios and its community of artists, please visit these sites: WesternAvenueStudios.com and LiveAtWAS.com. To learn more about First Saturday Open Studios click here to download an informative (and beautifully designed by one of our artists!) brochure.
